Some things aren't worth the time to check. Some news items aren't even worth reading beyond the headline. I am selective what news stories I pay attention to. Time is an important resource. With each passing day there is less and less of it.

Unfortunately the mainstream media & the major networks are not unbiased and are not trustworthy. Their reports need to be verified for accuracy and completeness, which is not always possible.
