Robert Reese Ruark, JD, ThN is an attorney in private practice in Canton, Michigan. He has a master of theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary, (1984) and a law degree from Marquette University (1991) and he studies Second Century Judaism at the University of Michigan.
His main contention is that Lewis ignores most of the Judaic and legendary history that contributes to the make up of the Jesus story.
The final paragraph of the article reads as follows:
"Had Lewis familiarized himself with the texts such as these, and with the totality and beauty of Second Temple Jewish thought, he would've recognized the legendary features of the Jesus traditions in the Gospels. But his eyes were shut. closed off to competing theories, and all his pretty prose, his poetics, and his skills of persuasion cannot conceal the fact that his religious devotion turned an otherwise intelligent scholar into an unversed dunderhead who didn't know what he was talking about."
Interestingly, I had occasion to be exposed to Lewis's "The Problem of Pain" due to some suffering in my family during my teens. His exposition pre-supposed most of what is Christian dogma, i.e. the existence of a soul in the afterlife, heaven, hell etc.and it was probably helpful to most Christian believers. However, it left me cold and I thought it was absolute crap.
JMO, YMMV
