Ironic, given that the perp was Sikh (generally law-abiding and well-assimilated in the UK), not a Muslim. But the Hampshire Police's deplorable conduct in that tragedy vividly illustrated the claims of those who call Britain's justice system "two-tiered." The result will very likely end up being the removal of the exception Sikhs have had from the laws against carrying knives in the UK. It might take a change in ruling party (away from Labour), but it's probable that the kirpan will no longer be permitted to be carried except in miniature, blunted form, "ceremonial" in more than just name. One law for all...

To their credit, many Sikh leaders in the UK have unreservedly condemned the murder (and the killer's family's actions in trying to cover up the crime), pointing out that using the kirpan as a weapon is permitted only when faced with a dangerous attacker...and certainly not against an unarmed, probably inebriated youth. They also pointed out that lying about such an act instead of taking responsibility is no less grievous a violation of their principles.
