In the 1970 film Patton, General George S. Patton tells his chaplain to write a "weather prayer," famously demanding: "Let's see if we can't get God helping us with this thing." When the chaplain hesitates about praying for good weather to kill enemies, Patton confidently asserts: "I can assure you, sir, because of my intimate relations with the Almighty, if you write a good prayer, we'll have good weather."The famous movie exchange is based on a real directive. Patton was frustrated by the rain and mud hindering his Third Army's advance. He ordered Chief Chaplain James H. O'Neill to draft a weather prayer, which was subsequently printed on 250,000 small cards and distributed to the troops. The prayer asked the "Almighty and most merciful Father" to restrain the immoderate rains and grant fair weather for battle.
That was the hilarious scene I remember.
