do they have references
what kind of education
are they willing to take more education for that goal
are they networking in any way
I agree that goals are important, and the "never be as good" mindset can be harmful, with one exception. If it is true.
For example, I love astronomy but I will never be as good as my astronomy professor (resources, time, etc). Reality check. Common sense. That doesn't stop me from loving the stars and watching the sky. I have some knowledge in my back pocket, but not enough to strive for the place I would want to be if I invested time, money, etc.
