They self-describe it as a "socialist market economy," which probably overstates the "socialist" part a bit (although the central government exercises strategic-level control over key industries: energy, telecommunications, banking, and major infrastructure) and they mandate a number of social benefits. The party, basically, wields considerable power and influence over China's business community, but in practice those corporations have a pretty free hand.
