Getting older

Each person has a choice about how they react to getting older. One can cry about it, or one can laugh about the experience. Joking appears to be healthier.

Getting older seems to be one step forward and two back.

Mondo, well, it is sort of an unraveling of mobility and thought.

My family knows if I stop laughing something is seriously wrong.

Funny up until 3 years ago I rarely got sick. Now my body's warantee seems to have run out lol

And don’t intend to. At the moment I’m laid up in bed on the California coast. Getting over the worst cold EVER. Gout in both feet. I don’t dare eat much. Neuropathy slowly numbing my feet and legs. Oh I’m of good cheer. Tons of fun.

I’m not growing old gracefully.

GOG, I have various health issues that will likely kill me, not to mention the likelihood of new ones on the way. I can focus on that and become completely miserable, or I can focus on the things that still can enjoy, and even enjoy my stable periods, as well as short periods when in is not so noticeable.

Never said getting older and health issues were a joke, I just do not see any reason to become more miserable than necessary.

I get distracted and lose things far more often, I have to think every step, especially if I start to lose my balance. Getting dressed or undressed gets odd when I forget how to do some of it. I have to make sure when I put out my medicines to take it before I forget to take it, and it happens sometime. Then the various amounts of pain, and the times I lose a word in the middle of speaking a sentence, that do daily.

But complaining about those things will not stop them from happening, so why bother complaining them. Instead, I enjoy noting when I have days of fewer problems or none at all for a while. Having only my lower back hurting instead of my knees, hips, upper back, shoulders and neck. Sleeping a night without going through the shaking, or even having less shaking.

Meanwhile, watching the birds I feed getting noisy and ready for mating, and the feeding area start to look much lite singles bar.

Or interacting with my crazy cat leaping and jumping or running at full speed inside. He makes the customers happy as well. He likes being brushed.

Making people laugh for my experiences, or a surprisingly good sale.

Now all the things mentioned, good and bad, sometimes happen the same time. So it is my choice which I pay most attention to, and either enjoy, or be miserable about.

GOG, sometimes you have to first determine which it is and then figure out how to deal with it. The conditions keep changing, so you are constantly re adjusting. However, this what life is about, adjusting to change. Your first major change is at birth, none of which you understand, or even like, but you have to start learning and figuring out until you begin to get results that work.

Now with disabilities and health issues, you do your best to maintain your independence. Often people try to help, but you try not to let
them help too much, least you become dependent on their help. So being able to live mostly on my own and having my little shop to run, keeps life interesting. Both I will continue to do as long as I am capable.

AS I have said, I am always a bit amazed to still be here and functioning as well as I have so far.

WHat kind of establishment do you operate?

Tourist shop of geodes that have been mining for fifty years, first shop in Oregon, fifty years ago, this one now for forty years.

I am glad to have it to keep my functional, being rather limited in mobility and strength. I have a lot of fun running it.

My favorite retail store in the US is Jim Gray's in Holbrook AZ.

Mugwump, there are stores that are a pleasure to be in, and ones that are a hassle to be in. It depends on whether employees stay long enough to be a functioning team. Depends also on how the boss or owner works with them. Does the boss notice their successes, and how does he deal with their mistakes.

When my mother was getting old, it seemed she had to visit her doctor or get some medical tests almost every week. She had a long list of prescriptions she was taking. It seemed like staying healthy was a full time job for her.

Now I'm getting old and I think I need to visit my doctor more so I can stay healthy.

Humor is good. A positive attitude helps.

Being negative can be a positive for my personality type.

It is a matter of choice how we handle the complexity of getting older. That I learned while working in the nursing home. Humor seems to be the best way, turning the problems in to jokes, humor helps one to get by.

recently, 2024, the British version was closed but the U.S. one still is in print (circulation around 3 million?) and in digital versions. Guess the Britts aren't laughing...I haven't seen nor read one in years myself.

May have to look online and see what's what.
