JERUSALEM — Israeli forces have killed so many journalists that Reuters has stopped sharing the locations of its teams in the Gaza Strip with the country's military, the international news agency told NBC News.

A Reuters cameraman who regularly operated its live position on the roof of Nasser Hospital was one of five journalists among 22 people killed in an Israeli attack on the facility Monday.

“We subsequently desisted from giving precise coordinates of our teams after so many journalists were killed in IDF strikes,” added Reuters, which said it ran a live feed from the site for the last 18 months.

In response to a request for comment on the Reuters statement, the IDF said it had “no further comment beyond the statement that has been put out.” Soon after the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it had been a “tragic mishap.”

In a statement Tuesday, the IDF claimed that an initial inquiry found that troops had identified a camera at the hospital that was being used to observe its troops “in order to direct terrorist activities against them.” It added that “troops operated to remove the threat by striking and dismantling the camera.”

According to five journalists on the ground, there was only one camera — Reuters’ — at the top of the hospital. A senior Hamas official has claimed it did not have a camera in the area.

The Israeli military, which did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims that Hamas ran a camera on the roof of the hospital or address the multiple strikes on the facility, added that an investigation had been ordered into “several gaps” including the “authorization process” before the attack.

According to the internationally recognized Committee to Protect Journalists, 197 journalists have been killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza since it began less than two years ago, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists the CPJ has documented.

More details emerged Thursday about Israel's deadly attack on Nasser Hospital.

Initially, Monday’s pair of deadly Israeli strikes appeared to be a “double tap” attack, in which the same target was hit twice in quick succession. The tactic, military analysts say, is to wait for first responders to race to the scene of the first attack before striking again.

But an NBC News analysis of newly obtained video has found that at least four Israeli munitions were fired at the medical complex.

Following the first Israeli strike on the facility, the video shows two projectiles flying through the air, striking the fourth-floor staircase in quick succession at 10:17 a.m. local time Monday.

Weapons munitions expert and war crimes investigator Chris Cobb Smith, who has analyzed the video, said the projectiles clearly visible are missiles.

The IDF did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the newest revelations.

Israel has barred the international media from entering Gaza since Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack, except for occasional tours chaperoned by the IDF.

Israel barring international media from entering Gaza raises questions in my mind too. More questions with little answers. Regardless, IDF surely knew they were firing upon a hospital. Reuters did say they regularly operated from the roof of Nasser Hospital.

Netanyahu's government has (correctly) assumed that the pipeline of weapons and money from the US isn't likely to be interrupted by international opinion. They also assume (probably* correctly) that no amount of international outrage is doing to result in armed intervention. They see a clear path to annexation of the Strip and massive reduction in the Palestinian population there (one way or another).

A measured and reasonable response to the Hamas attacks would have garnered sympathy and approval from all but the most anti-Israel nations. But that approval wasn't going to net Israel that territory and reduction of a population that will never be anything but their sworn enemies. So they made a cold, calculated decision to take the course of action we've seen.

Gaza is a hot mess right now. War typically causes confusion and chaos. We will have a better idea after the dust from the war settles - whenever that may be. What happens if a hospital loses its protected status?

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), says: “Any military operation around or within hospitals must take steps to spare and protect the patients, medical staff, and other civilians. All feasible precautions must be taken, including effective warnings, which consider the ability of patients, medical staff, and other civilians to evacuate safely.”

Philip-Gay said: “The other party must take all precautions to avoid intentionally targeting civilians.” Even if the hospital was used for “acts harmful to the enemy”, Philip-Gay said, the other party “does not have the right to bombard it for two days and completely destroy it”, citing the need under international law for the response to be “proportionate”.

She added that the other party must give advance warning of its response and that evacuation procedures must be put in place for patients and health workers.

Alternatively, they could be asked “to isolate themselves in a part of the hospital”, she said. But during any military operation against the site, “there have to be doctors to take care of the patients”.

However, this shield is not absolute. The Geneva Conventions go on to say that a hospital can lose this protected status if an armed group uses the hospital to carry out "acts harmful to the enemy."

Legal scholars say a Hamas attack from a hospital could make it a military target, though not immediately.

The Geneva Conventions add that the opposing side, in this case Israel, must give the hospital "due warning" and allow a "reasonable time limit" to see if the attacks stop.

And any retaliation must be proportionate. A lone gunman firing from a hospital wouldn't give an army the right to destroy the entire building and harm large numbers of civilians, according to lawyers.

New footage shows Israel struck Gaza's Nasser Hospital four times

Israel struck Nasser Hospital at least four times during its deadly attack in southern Gaza on Monday, an analysis of new video footage by BBC Verify has found.

The attack, which has attracted international condemnation and widespread anger, reportedly killed at least 20 people, including five journalists.

Initial reports from Gaza said that Israel had struck the hospital twice, with the first blast followed nine minutes later by another which hit first responders and journalists who arrived at the scene.

But new analysis suggests the hospital was struck four times in total. BBC Verify and expert analysis found that two staircases were hit almost simultaneously in the first wave, and while what was thought to be a single later attack was in fact two separate strikes hitting the same place within a fraction of a second.

Israel does not allow international journalists to enter Gaza independently. BBC Verify identified the additional strikes by analysing dozens of videos provided by a freelancer on the ground and material filmed by eyewitnesses that circulated online.

In the first incident, an Israeli strike hit the exterior staircase on the hospital's eastern side at 10:08 local time (07:08 GMT), killing journalist Hussam Al-Masri who was operating a live TV feed for Reuters.

BBC Verify has now identified another previously unreported blast at a northern wing staircase at practically the same time, which was overshadowed by the "double-tap" strike on the eastern staircase.

New footage shows smoke rising and damage at both staircases, while emergency workers said the hospital's operating department was hit.

Other videos show an injured person being carried down the northern staircase and the hospital's nursing director holding shredded and bloodied clothing which he said was being worn by a nurse while she was working in the operating department when it was hit.

N R Jenzen-Jones - the director of Armament Research Services, an arms and munitions intelligence company - said the footage "appears to show interior damage consistent with a relatively small munition, including an entry hole that suggests a munition with a relatively flat trajectory".

Roughly nine minutes later, while dozens of first responders and journalists gathered on the eastern staircase, Israeli forces struck the facility again.

While the blast was documented by media at the time, frame-by-frame analysis of newly emerged footage clearly shows that two separate projectiles fired by Israeli forces hit the hospital milliseconds apart at an exposed stairwell where journalists and emergency workers had gathered.

Experts disagreed on the type of munition used in the third and fourth strikes.

Some munitions analysts with whom BBC Verify shared footage with identified the projectiles as Lahat missiles, a guided munition which can be fired from tanks, drones and helicopters. Several outlets in Israel have suggested that the munitions used against the hospital were fired by Israeli tanks stationed nearby.

The experts who spoke to BBC Verify said the blasts could not have been caused by a single tank, due to the quick succession in which the munitions hit the hospital.

"If these Lahats were fired from the ground, then at least two tanks would have been involved, as the interval between the two impacts is far too short," Amael Kotlarski, an analyst with the Janes defence intelligence company, said. "No tank loader could have reloaded that fast."

Meanwhile, Mr Jenzen-Jones said that the "impact of two projectiles at nearly the exact same moment suggests two tanks may have fired on the target simultaneously".

Although he said it wasn't possible to definitively identify the munitions used, the apparent physical characteristics and pattern of flight "suggest a 'multi-purpose' tank gun projectile, such as the Israeli M339 model".

Satellite images reviewed by BBC Verify show IDF forces 2.5km north-east of Nasser Hospital and within firing range on the day of the attack. Other armoured vehicles can also be seen nearby.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had no additional comment on the newly identified blasts when approached by BBC Verify.

Israel's narrative of the attack has evolved since Monday's attack. It initially said it had carried out a strike in the area of the hospital, saying that it "regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals " and that an initial inquiry would be opened as soon as possible, but provided no justification for the attack.

In the hours that followed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was responsible and that it "deeply regrets the tragic mishap".

On Tuesday, the IDF said an initial inquiry found that troops had identified a camera positioned by Hamas in the area of the hospital "used to observe the activity of IDF troops", without providing evidence.

The IDF has not yet acknowledged carrying out more than one strike on the hospital, amid allegations from some international legal experts that it may have violated international law.

Intentionally carrying out attacks on civilians which are "excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated" is prohibited under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

"A reasonable attacker must expect scores of civilian casualties since a hospital is full of protected persons," Professor Janina Dill of Oxford University said.

Prof Dill added that the "mere presence of equipment that belongs to an adversary" does not mean a hospital or medical facility loses its protected status under the laws of war.

But hatred unchecked has a way of consuming a person.

No one objects to Hamas getting what it deserves and then some. Israel in taking out Hamas has gone too far. Its obvious that Israel is more than willing to steam roll over anyone who gets in their way. Israel clearly wants Gaza a toxic wasteland so that it can no longer be inhabited by the Palestinians. Israel wants to get rid of the Palestinians in any way possible - and if that means extermination, then that's what it means. Hamas has become Israel's shield to try and excuse its behavior.

There is absolutely no reason that justifies the slaughter and/or starvation of children and infants. None.

The idea that journalists and health workers deserve to be killed because they are terrorist in disguise is beyond reason. Oh there might be a handful here and there, but not all of them. We are talking thousands here.

Many who believe war to be a necessary evil do not celebrate it, do not cheer it on and prefer it end as soon as possible. From the totality of your posts, I can not include you as one of them.

The war in Gaza is totally lopsided. There is no doubt that Israel has the upper hand. There is also no doubt that the infrastructure of Gaza has been decimated and the civilian population is suffering, even dying because of it.

Hospitals, schools, homes - all have been targeted and blown up in varying degrees of damage and numbers by the IDF. It is inconceivable that healthcare workers have not lost their lives. It is inconceivable that civilians have not lost their lives. The numbers can't be small. The war has gone on far too long for numbers to be small.

I have often found that it is a mistake to believe that a government, even an elected one represents its people. Governments lie all the time - just look at our government. We have a corrupt self-serving greedy government that we elect. Does that mean that you are corrupt too? Of course not. It's not that simple.

The attack on Israel by Hamas was totally brutal and barbaric. I don't care what Israel does to Hamas. Have at them. A response by Israel was not only expected but justified.

Carrying it as far as Israel has is not justified. The continued blockade, displacement of civilians who have no where to go and are essentially trapped, continued military action and continued destruction of Gaza's infrastructure has condemned the civilian population to suffering and death.

But Israel doesn't care - and that is obvious.

He didn't want Gaza and the West Bank uniting under the Palestinian Authority. He tried to weaken it. On October 7th his strategy came back to bite him in the ass.

Hamas was/is armed. The Palestinians were/are not. There is no way they stood a chance resisting/fighting Hamas. The idea that Israel would unite with the Palestinians to fight a common enemy is not realistic. Israel regarded the Palestinians as enemies then and they still do.

Israel and its sustained blockades both past and present isn't going to win them any fans with the Palestinians.

But when Russia becomes desperate enough to actually destroy the US (surprise nuke attack), the Bear will invoke Ezekiel 38 and 39. I am not big on conspiracies but I don't put it past any nation to take advantage of a bad situation when and where it can.

The support of the US emboldens Israel. Israel wants to rid Gaza of the Palestinians and not just Hamas. Hamas became Israel's excuse to kill off as many Palestinians as possible. The Palestinians do not have the power to fight off enemies on two fronts - Israel and Hamas and Israel knows it. The US supports Israel due to 'American Interests' and not due to morality. Putin is a thug in a suit who wants the natural resources of the Ukraine, plus he wants to resurrect the USSR into a new Russian empire with him sitting on the throne. And Trump? He is very good at alienating our allies - he is all over the place and totally in love with executive orders not to mention bulldozing the White House as if its his own personal property (he is a guest there and a temporary one at that).

The world is a mess.

I wouldn't hold my breath for divine intervention. Humans made the mess. It's up to them to clean it up. What are the chances of that happening? Not a snow's ball chance in hell.
