AI on Bias and Stereotypes. ChatGPT

One question, as your knowledge comes from information from the internet, are you not likely to pick up our biases and stereotypes about various groups of people or races?

That’s an excellent and very insightful question — and yes, it touches on one of the core challenges in developing AI systems like me.

You’re absolutely right: since I’ve been trained on large amounts of human-generated text (including material from the internet, books, and other sources), those sources inevitably contain human biases, stereotypes, and unequal representations. Without careful safeguards, an AI could reflect or even amplify those biases.

To reduce this, OpenAI (my developer) uses multiple strategies, such as:

Curating and filtering training data to exclude harmful or biased content where possible.

Reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), where human reviewers guide the model toward fair, respectful, and balanced responses.

Ongoing evaluation and adjustment, so if biased or unfair behavior is detected, it can be corrected.

Ethical and policy constraints, which guide me to avoid making or reinforcing harmful generalizations about people or groups.

That said, no system is completely bias-free — including humans. The goal is to make me aware of these issues and able to respond responsibly, transparently, and with respect for everyone.

Would you like me to explain how bias can subtly appear in AI responses even when safeguards are in place?

AI does it's best to encourage a user to continue using it. It is very polite and tries to agree with you.

I've gotten it to change its mind a few times by feeding it facts.

I think it would be great for use with IRS tax questions, but alas, it is dumber than a rock. It gave answers that I knew were wrong from the start, so it can't be trusted.

It's the new dot.com bubble.

Also, when it tells me what its inventors are doing to make it safer, I consider no more truthful than any other advertising. Still it is fun to use occasionally, and I assume it will be quite addictive for a great many, but not too helpful in its effect on less human socializing.

They have a plan to keep the kiddies out. I'm sure young people are resourceful enough to find a way around that one.

I don't see any good coming from this.

It must be to attract users and to make them addicts.

At the present time, it is all free, but that could change. But, they have information on users; lots of it, which they can then sell to the highest bidders.

The goal is to create ever more addicted custumers

Most products are created hopping to addict people to the new product. This is especially true with everything since the start of the Internet, smartphone and the smartphone and now AI. Making people more dependant is the goal.

IMO AI being used for this purpose is unwarranted. It's supposed to be a tool not entertainment (if you can call porn that)

Wikipedia is the only fee-for-service I dignify. It is a very useful resource when used properly.

I contribute just about every time they plead for help, which is about twice a year.

I was lucky to get a free subscription to Mundia.com before it was acquired by insanely pricey Ancestry.com. I have built a family tree back to the early 1600s which includes over 1000 entries. Right now, it is tantamount to a beautiful Arbor Vitae. If I back-filled it with all the descendants from the treetop, it would be more like a giant blue spruce, with hundreds of thousands of points. I keep adding, but it gets cumbersome navigating the hierarchy and keeping up with there I left off. It gets to the point that you "can't see the tree for the forest". Then, following the "tips" leads to conflicting names, dates, relationships, etc.

The biggest name in the tree is world-renowned Andrew Jackson who married my 3G Aunt Rachel. Oddly, they had no direct offspring, but adopted a child from my side of the fam, Rachel's nephew, whom they named AJ Jr. They also adopted a native boy named Lyncoya. Rachel was living when Jackson was elected but died before he was inaugurated. Rachel's niece, Emily served as the White House Hostess, and her husband served as Jackson's Secretary. I have her cup that her brother, my 2GF, gave to her which she took to the WH with her.

Lyncoya was discovered as an infant clinging to his dead mother's body after the Battle of Tallushatchee, and was taken in by Jackson and named after a Jackson acquaintance. He was raised in the Jackson household with Andrew Jr.
