One defintion for middle English word trump

“Trump” also came to mean to deceive or cheat, as in “trumped-up story” (fabricated).
This sense evolved separately from the musical
meaning, from a root meaning to blow or boast.

Studying earlier definitions of English words can be fun.

The Middle English word for "cox" was cok (or variations such as cock(e), koce), which meant a male domestic chicken, or rooster.

Cox-a-Doodle-Doo, Miss Cox.

Is the root from the same source as cock?

Not all the newer versions are improvements. [Grin] Just young people like their slang that older people don't understand, perhaps we older people need the same that the younger people won't understand. [Grin]

It can also refer to someone who lived near a "hillcock" or "mound" from the same Old English word, and in Welsh, "cox" could mean "red". Another source suggests a Dutch origin from the name "Kok" for a cook.

I used to be in a group, the Society for Creative Anachronism. I spent a great deal of time using the Encyclopedia Britannica to trace back old English to create place names for my character.
Unfortunately, I got Pancreatitis and never got back to it.

I like fanfare. Indeed the Bible does too.
