No longer a permitted place: Jewish law from the Torah specified that sacrifices had to be performed in a single, designated sanctuary chosen by God. This location was first the Tabernacle and then the Temple in Jerusalem.

Roman destruction: The Roman army destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple in A.D. 70. This act ended the ability to perform animal sacrifices as prescribed by law, since there was no longer a valid place to offer them.

Practical and religious consequence: With the temple gone, there was no altar, no priestly class to perform the rites, and no temple to center Jewish worship around

The Jews realized that Animal sacrifice was POINTLESS.

Transition from idolatry: Rambam argued that animal sacrifice was a widespread religious custom in ancient times. To suddenly abolish it would have been as shocking to the Israelites as telling people today to stop praying or fasting. Therefore, God instituted sacrifices to God as a way to gradually transition the Israelites away from pagan practices, a more comprehensible method of worship for them at the time.

Wouldn't that be a Christian rationale as opposed to a Jewish one?

alto, I can't vouch for those passages referenced in the Talmud, as I have never been interested. But that doesn't change anything.

Israel has a history of falling away from God, with a faithful remnant always remaining. When Jesus came, a small remnant claimed him as Messiah. Those that fell away, reinvented Judaism.

But, when Jesus comes again, many of those Jews that fell away will recognize their Messiah. What a glorious day that will be.

They fail to understand the greatest symbolism in human history.

Yet here Israel in the middle of prophecy and fails to see that. And their abysmal failure to understand that the sacrifice of the flesh was the atonement for humanity’s collective guilt. Jesus was the Lamb. But is on His way to rule with a rod of iron. Whatever, I’m for treating animals with kindness and compassion. Humans too. But we are not innocent, none of us.
