OT: Handling the high cost of postage as a small business

I am looking to see who here has run a small (or one-person) business and how you handled postage.
I am in the middle of a new project, but was looking at flat rate (ouch). I cannot drive because of physical limitations so I need another viable idea.
Please, no wisecracks. I will appreciate helpful input.
