Why do so many Americans run over pedestrians?

In USA, pedestrian deaths have increased by about 75% since 2009.

It's not like that in other countries.

We have a lot of e-bike riders stare at the cell phone in one hand and steer with the other

I don't see how they can stay on the road at 25 mph

when viewing from behind they seem to be on pot. But in passing them the cell phone is obviously in use as they are looking down. Of course they could be both stoned and using the phone.

Why do so many American Pedistrians watch their phones instead of where they are going?

Distracted walking is a major safety hazard: pedestrians on their phones are 46% more likely to be involved in a vehicle crash. Using a phone while walking reduces traffic awareness, increases jaywalking, and causes trips or falls. Many cities even fine distracted walkers for crossing while typing.

Impact: Injuries from distracted walking—ranging from tripping over curbs to stepping directly into traffic—have more than doubled since 2004.
