Such a move can be seen are representing the long-running shift in this country away from being a much looser (originally) federation of largely independent polities towards a more unified, centralized state. Currently, the country is so big and there are so many states that the nation is often at cross-purposes with itself, and the Senate is basically an ongoing conflict-of-interest. Obviously actually breaking up into 7 or 8 regional polities would be preferable, but eliminating the Senate and the EC would address the current situation of disproportionate representation.

Worth it? A good idea? That's certainly up for debate, but I think accepting the possibility that the original vision that worked with 13 former colonies (and for a good while after that as the nation expanded) is far from ideal today makes sense.
