Is Artificial Intelligence making students too lazy to think and write for themselves?

A college professor gave an assignment and most students used AI to answer the question. The students did not even check the answer that AI gave them. They just copied and pasted it.

The Simpsons also did a cartoon about this topic.

Maybe teachers should ask more in class verbal questions where students will not be able to use AI to answer.

Our entire culture is heading for the toilet.

"The assignment involves no laptop, no chatbot and no technology of any kind. In fact, there’s no pen or paper, either.

Instead, students in Chris Schaffer’s biomedical engineering class at Cornell University are required to speak directly to an instructor in what he calls an “oral defense.”

It’s a testing method as old as Socrates and making a comeback in the AI age. A growing number of college professors say they are turning to oral exams, and combining a variety of old-fashioned and cutting-edge techniques, to help address a crisis in higher education.

“You won’t be able to AI your way through an oral exam,” says Schaffer, who introduced the oral defense last semester.

Educators are no longer naively wondering if students will use generative AI to do their homework for them. A big question now is how to determine what students are actually learning."

assignments that can only be completed in class under supervision.

there are so many ways to cheat (and even ads that encourage it0

Had a couple in College...They are tough

Of course there were no personal computers when I was in school.

That written tests were much easier, because there was usually something in the test that would jog your memory and you could go back to a question you couldn't answer before and get it the second time around.

The oral exam I had was with three profs. You had to take the questions as they came, no going back. You definitely had to know the answer and be able to defend it. Glad there was only a couple of those. Really had to know my stuff for that one.

Oral exams are time consuming for teachers. I think written exams with no computers would suffice. No googling for answers.
