A. Jesus visited his hometown twice after his ministry began. Not only did he receive a less than warm response both times, the hostility and rejection directed his way truly amazed him (Mark 6:6)!
The first visit
Jesus declared, during his first visit, that a 700+ year old Biblical prophecy predicted his ministry and that its words were being fulfilled as he read them (Luke 4:17 - 21)! Those in the synagogue, who knew him all his earthly life, find it incredibly hard to believe "one of their own" was filled with such wisdom. Their desire to have the Lord prove his calling by performing miracles in front of them earns his rebuke (verses 23 - 27).
Infuriated at being corrected, the synagogue crowd form a mob and attempt to murder Christ by pushing him off a cliff (Luke 4:28 - 29)! Unsurprisingly, he did not perform any miracles during this visit.
Second attempt
Jesus' second visit to Nazareth, roughly 18 months later, brought him again to the city's sole synagogue. Many in attendance, after hearing him teach, state the following.
"From where did this Man get these things? And what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, that by His hands MANY miracles are done also?
"Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? And they were offended in Him." (Mark 6:2 - 3).
Those who knew Jesus best were unwilling to accept his countless miracles, done elsewhere, as proof God was with him. This, coupled with their hard-hearted refusal to accept his words at face value, lead to them being offended at him (Mark 6:3)!
The Bible says Jesus, in the face of such faithlessness, "was not able to do any works of power there" (Mark 6:5). Although he did heal a few people (likely outside the synagogue), he did not do mightier wonders or heal even more folks as such acts would have been wasted on those who openly rejected him.
