I'm a black racer. About four feet long, solid black, and fast enough that I look like a rope someone threw across the pavement. I can move at roughly four miles per hour, which doesn't sound like much until it's happening three feet from your ankles.
I'm not venomous. Round pupils. No fangs. No venom. A common, harmless snake that lives in suburban yards across the eastern US.
🐍 Here's what I do on your property:
I eat mice — a lot of mice. I'm one of the more effective rodent hunters in suburban yards, and I work for free
I eat juvenile rats, voles that chew your bulbs, and chipmunks tunneling near your foundation
I don't constrict. I don't ambush. I see prey, I chase it, and I grab it. Built for speed
I also have a terrible strategy for roads. When startled, I freeze. Then I bolt in a straight line — not away from the threat, just forward. If that line crosses a road, I don't adjust. Speed is my only defense and it doesn't work against tires.
🌿 If you see me in your yard, I'm working. If you see me on a road, I'm in trouble.
I'm the fastest thing in your garden. And probably the most useful thing you'll flinch at this spring.
