'Hundreds of homes...destroyed': Neighbors push back against Waycross bypass proposal
Pierce County homeowners are sounding the alarm over a proposed bypass they said would cut straight through their property.
WAYCROSS, Ga. — Some Pierce County homeowners are sounding the alarm over a proposed bypass they said would cut straight through their property, while commissioners from Ware, Brantley, and Pierce counties said the project is designed to address traffic concerns around Waycross.
Ware County Commissioner Jon Tindall said they are still in the very early stages of proposing a perimeter road around Waycross to ease congestion concerns.
“This is our family property that the proposed bypass is going to destroy,” said Blake Edwards, a Pierce County homeowner. Edwards said four generations of his family live on the 70 acres of land his family purchased back in the 60s.
“This is just one of the most peaceful parts of our property, and this is where they want to put a four-lane highway.” Tindall said this plan has been in the works since last year. He said so far, they only have a rough map of where the perimeter road will cut through.
He mentions Ware County tried creating a bypass around Waycross in 2013, but it didn't come to fruition due to public pushback.
“We absolutely need it,” Tindall said in response to being asked why the Ware, Brantley, and Pierce county commissioners are bringing the topic up again.
Commissioner Tindall said while they’re still waiting on a completed traffic report, he believes the bypass will lead to more industry benefiting the three counties.
He said the bypass will circle Waycross but also include parts of Brantley County and parts of Pierce County.
However, he said he plans for minimal impact on homes.
“Anytime you’re gonna have growth or have expansion like this, somebody somewhere is gonna lose out...The idea is that whenever we turn it over to the dot to let this plan come to fruition that they would go and do their studies to find the route that would have the least impact on human life and environmental impact.”
However, Edwards said the commissioners were not effectively informing the community of the plans.
“This may be hundreds of homes between Pierce, Ware, and Brantley County that get destroyed just for the sake of convenience,” Edwards says.
Commissioner Tindall said they’re trying to work out a plan so that every community member has the opportunity to vote on whether or not they want this perimeter road to go through, but so far, there are no set dates on when this will be brought up again.
Anyone able to drive through the city of Waycross can realize that it’s traffic out to the mall slowing down important transportation of goods through Waycross…
I still think it would be a good draw if city leaders and planners looked into creating and locating in The Depot an HO scale replication of Waycross and the Rice Yards in the 1860s, the 1960s and in the upcoming 2026s

always the industry horseshit carrot dangling. Scapa/Voith is done and so is the millions of our dollars invested in the Simmons bedding scam. had nothing to do with transportation needs.
