one theory I read about the ending (sp)

as you said there's always been a lot of mystery about Yoda's species. until now we've only ever seen 2 of his kind...Yoda, obviously, and Yaddle (from Episode 1). Both were on the Jedi Counsel, so it's possible that his species has a predisposition to be extremely force sensitive. maybe that Empire scientist wanted the baby, which could be the last of the species, so he could experiment with it to see why it's so force sensitive
just some theory.
