When I worked for Oracle I flew more than any human should. 4 flights a week for 3 years...
...and for the most part they were totally benign...but one evening returning to San Francisco was a hair raiser. When you're coming into SFO, you basically are over water until right on the runway...the airport is on the Bay. Anyway, we're descending and I see the water, then I start to see the runway...then the pilot SLAMS the throttle, banks as hard as this big ass plane will go up and to the right. Overheads start to pop open, bells and alarms are going off, a few of those masks drop...and this MF'er just starts climbing back up again. Never knew exactly what happened but he came on the intercom and said "weeee're gonna come back around and take a second pass at that". I assume that another plane had somehow mistakenly turned onto our runway. Previous Message I've had a lot of difficult days losing people close to me or dealing with other types of loss, but I'm not sure if all of them were "scary" in terms of "holy crap at that and I need to rethink my life". I would imagine I will have those moments when people that are more pivotal in my life start passing. One scary moment that does stand out happened on a return flight home from Las Vegas. We had stayed out all night having fun because we had an early flight the next morning and just figured we might as well go straight from the casinos to the airport and just sleep on the way home on the plane. Everything was fine, the flight took off, and I fell asleep. I awoke to a crap ton of turbulence, and my brain basically was like "the plane is going down and you're doing to die" as I was in a foggy haze waking up...I screamed (scaring the crap out of my wife and a poor flight attendant). The rest of the flight was inconsequential, but I was absolutely amped the entire time. For about a year after that, I would have dreams in the middle of the night that I was on the plane as it was going down, and I'd wake up feeling like I was actually dead already. This subsided, but what has lasted is that I'm more afraid of flying and uncomfortable on flights than I ever was, and that sucks because I used to really enjoy flying. And in that moment I was thinking "holy shit, what happens to my kids, their mom and dad are going to die, wtf"...and that was the most scared I ever was. Previous Message Had a reminder today of mine...and I will share later
