obits are, or were, where you often found the best writing in the entire newspaper.
I did stints of it when I was a young staffer at tribune. you had room to flex, and could choose where you wanted to go as there was no real news prerogative for the piece. bigger obits, obviously, were often on people who had accomplished great things, which made the writing interesting. but not always. I had to write a bunch on soldiers/kids who were deployed to Iraq/afghanistan in 2000s. talked to many parents/siblings; gut-wrenching. Previous Message "To know if someone I went to school with died and I need to go to the visitation." Um...what? If you found out via the San Francisco Chronicle I don't think you need to attend the visitation. Previous Message counsel for one of my clients passed away. Corporate counsel and I work together frequently. We are friendly in the context of that work. But we don't lunch together or do things outside of work. The visitation is local. Do I go?
