I really wasn’t understanding the local and national narrative about how favorable our schedule was and kept hammering the point that I really thought it was setting up for the possibility of totally derailing our program momentum before we even got deep into it. And thankfully we avoided that so far. But look at some of the specifics…
- 4 of first 6 G4 on the road
- Will have played the current #1, #3, #20, and #28 teams through our first 6 G4 games. And a 5th opponent (Duke) could easily be ranked next week if they win a game they’re favored in over GT this weekend.
- 4 of the 6 QB’s we’ve played should be 1st round NFL draft picks this year or next, and a 5th (Williams) is top 20 in Heisman odds right now.
- All 6 teams we’ve played have at minimum met preseason expectations for how good they’d be, and I’d argue that at least 4 are better than expected.
I know the last 4 on the schedule is lighter, but this has been a gauntlet so far and in my opinion is the most difficult schedule I can ever remember an Illinois team playing. Some of that is the new reality with better teams joining the conference, but Duke and Indiana aren’t supposed to have teams like this either.
