at least in terms of hiring a sitting head coach. I think it's hard to hire someone for a job that isn't open. I expect people might be disinclined to trust and make a deal with an AD is going behind the back of his current coach. And there are probably other reasons as well. But time after time we see highly desirable jobs come open and there is a fairly long hiring process and usually not the apparent first choice getting the job.
