FWIW: I had heard that Carl "aged out" of the lead role in D Van Dyke. Only 3 years older than DVD.

Seriously, maybe the bald head made him look even older? Who knows.
Carl/Mel Brooks lived about a block or two away from each other in their old age (in S. California). Apparently it was quite common for one to walk over to the others' house for lunch on a daily basis... which turned into about a four-hour affair. :-)
