Unqualified Acting Director of key security agency wants to be macho and pushes for access to sensitive intel he doesn’t actually need. Career staff try to dissuade him, but he won’t be denied. He then fails the polygraph needed to be read in, and promptly blames senior career staff and puts them on admin leave, presumably in preparation for firing them.
All of this against a backdrop of the Agency being gutted by staffing cuts and diversions away from the actual critical cybersecurity mission and towards immigration.
It’s truly astonishing how fecklessly destructive the Trump admin has been. It would be hard to imagine a course of action that could have done more damage (near term and long term) to the security and capability of the country.
