The prosecution of a parent for their child committing a school shooting does have at least one precedent.

James Crumbley and his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2021 deadly shooting at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit by their son Ethan Crumbley.

Colt Gray's mother had cited the Crumbley case when she urged that her son's access to guns should be cut off before the 2024 mass shooting, according to Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith.

"We hope that (this conviction) moves the needle a little further," Smith told reporters.
