The Miami (OH) narrative is bullshit though. No one was scared of them coming into the season, they could have gotten teams to play them.

In our case, Illinois tries to schedule a range of mid-major buy games, and particularly teams that will finish at the top of their conference (see LIU; Oakland in years past).
To Painter's point, it's impossible to predict where teams will finish. I don't think anyone "dodged" Miami or VCU.
