NASA prompted significant advances in communications and in computing as two examples. Did they really matter? Hard to say. Sure, we would have gotten there eventually, and maybe almost as fast. Nobody can really argue we wouldn't have instant worldwide communications in 2026 if we hadn't gone to the moon.
