All of this is spot on and we did most of it. I’ll also add that we ended up texting and even
talking more (via FaceTime) to our oldest during her first two years of college than we did her last two years of high school. YMMV of course. But she was so busy those last two years of high school between school, work, and extracurriculars, and we were running around with her younger sibling who couldn’t yet drive themselves around, that there were weeks where it felt like we hardly even saw our eldest even though she was still living under our roof. The first month or two of the transition was definitely the hardest. Previous Message 1. Buy her a doorstop for her dorm room and tell her it’s her job to have her door open one hour a day to meet people. 2. Walk around campus and do a run of her classes if you can. 3. Go snag some food somewhere she can walk to. 4. Slip her a hundo before you go. 5. Expect to feel really down the next few days, but it will get better quickly. Text her that you love her whenever you get sad. Don’t be shocked if she’s busy and doesn’t return texts and calls as promptly as she did when she was at home. I think a lot of how we felt was based off timing and proximity. Our eldest was hard because it’s the first, and she was 3 hours away. Our second was easier because she was the second and it was only a little over and hour away. Felt different. Pride plus sadness both times, but more sad for the eldest. Previous Message this weekend? What made it better? Or harder?
