The Big Ten Must Be Stopped: Last Night’s Michigan–Western Michigan Montreal Screwjob Proved It Every college football fan who wants the good old days back—when geography existed, traditions mattered, conferences were composed of schools that could theoretically reach one another by bus and the sport was actually fun—should be rooting for a Big 12 or ACC national championship. At this point, it is bigger than conference loyalty. It is a moral obligation. The Big Ten is no longer an athletic conference. It is an organized crime syndicate disguised as a collection of land-grant universities. It destroyed the Pac-12, annexed four schools located roughly 2,000 miles from Chicago and built an 18-team, coast-to-coast protection racket funded by a multibillion-dollar television deal. It took a sport built on regional identity and decided America desperately needed UCLA playing Rutgers at noon in Piscataway before 14,000 exhausted people with absolutely no historical reason to dislike one another. USC is apparently a Midwestern school now. Oregon is conference rivals with Maryland. Washington’s athletes have to fly across three time zones for a volleyball match because some television executive wanted another Big Ten helmet available for the 10:30 p.m. window. Nothing about this is normal. The Big Ten didn’t expand. It acquired territory. First, it took Los Angeles. Then it grabbed Seattle and Eugene. The Pac-12 was left bleeding out behind a motel while Fox stood nearby wiping fingerprints from the murder weapon and insisting it had never met the victim. Oregon and Washington weren’t even initially given full revenue shares. They were brought into the family as associates. They have to kick their television money upstairs, sit at a folding table outside the social club and wait until Tony Petitti decides they’ve earned their button. The Big Ten and Fox even co-own the Big Ten Network. This isn’t a conference with a television contract. It’s a television conglomerate that occasionally stages amateur football games. The SEC briefly restored my faith in institutional integrity by suing Lane Kiffin and LSU in federal court for trying to turn college football into NFL alumni weekend. That conference may be insane, but at least it still has rules. Greg Sankey saw Lane Kiffin attempting to assemble a roster of former professional football players and responded by serving him with federal paperwork. Lane wanted to recruit guys who had already attended NFL training camps, and Sankey reacted like Lane had attempted to enrich uranium beneath Tiger Stadium. That is leadership. Meanwhile, the Big Ten distributed a record $1.37 billion to its members and continued consolidating control of the sport like Standard Oil with marching bands. The conference has Fox, CBS, NBC and the Big Ten Network. It has nearly every valuable television market between New York and Los Angeles. It has enough lawyers, executives and replay technicians to overthrow a medium-sized government. Its schools occupy every major television window, and a 10–2 Big Ten team can lose to the only two good teams it played and still be discussed by the playoff committee as though it survived the Bataan Death March. And then came last night’s Montreal Screwjob in Ann Arbor. Western Michigan stopped Michigan’s final Hail Mary. The clock showed 0:00. The pass fell incomplete. The Broncos celebrated what should have been a historic 12–7 victory in the Big House. The game was over. Then Vince McMahon marched out of the Michigan Stadium tunnel wearing a sleeveless Big Ten quarter-zip, grabbed the referee by the headset and screamed, “PUT ONE SECOND BACK ON THE FUCKING CLOCK.” The stadium lights went black. “No Chance in Hell” started playing. Tony Petitti appeared in the end zone carrying the Big Ten’s $1.37 billion television contract in a steel briefcase and yelled, “RUN THE FUCKING PLAY BACK.” Western Michigan was Bret Hart, standing there in complete disbelief after winning under the rules everyone had agreed upon. Michigan was Shawn Michaels, pretending to have no idea what was happening while quietly jogging back onto the field and lining up for another Hail Mary. The referee was Earl Hebner. He wouldn’t make eye contact with Western Michigan. He just kept pointing toward the replay booth and whispering, “I have a family.” One second suddenly reappeared from beyond the grave. Not a penalty, an untimed down or a normal clock stoppage everyone noticed in real time. The Big Ten simply found another second after the game had ended, like a corrupt police department finding an unregistered handgun in the trunk of a suspect’s car. Somewhere inside the Big Ten command center, an alarm had started flashing: MICHIGAN ABOUT TO LOSE TO DIRECTIONAL SCHOOL. Emergency procedures were activated. Phones rang in Chicago. Television executives were moved into the situation room. A black sedan pulled up behind the replay booth. Vince McMahon stood in the end zone pointing at the clock while Connor Stalions handed him a laminated sheet titled “OPERATION SECOND CHANCE.” “RUN IT BACK, GODDAMMIT.” Naturally, Michigan used its court-ordered extension of reality to throw a 47-yard touchdown and win 13–12. The Big House exploded. Jim Harbaugh rappelled from the scoreboard. Connor Stalions disappeared into the crowd wearing a Western Michigan polo and fake mustache. Shawn Michaels sprinted onto the field holding the Paul Bunyan Trophy for reasons nobody could explain. Michigan had not won a football game. It had successfully cashed in Money in the Bank. Western Michigan had defeated Michigan under the commonly understood laws of time. Unfortunately, it had failed to account for Big Ten maritime law. The Broncos didn’t lose. They got booked into a wrestling angle without being shown the script. At Survivor Series 1997, Bret Hart never submitted. Vince McMahon simply ordered the bell rung and declared Shawn Michaels the winner. Last night, Western Michigan never surrendered another play. Vince Petitti simply ordered another second placed on the clock and declared that Michigan’s first failed Hail Mary had been a rehearsal. The only difference is that Bret Hart got to spit in Vince McMahon’s face afterward. Western Michigan had to shake hands, attend a press conference and praise the resilience of its players. Then came the investigation. The Big Ten reviewed the conduct of Big Ten officials, using Big Ten replay equipment at the home stadium of a Big Ten member, and concluded that the Big Ten had acted correctly. Case closed. It was Vince McMahon investigating the Montreal Screwjob and releasing a statement that Bret screwed Bret. The Big Ten’s official position was essentially: “Western Michigan screwed Western Michigan by failing to defend a play that should never have existed.” The MAC accepted the explanation, presumably after its commissioner woke up beside a horse head wearing a winged helmet. Big Ten defenders will insist the decision was technically correct because a Western Michigan player touched the ball with one second supposedly remaining on the synchronized stadium clock. Of course they will. Every criminal organization has accountants. The books always balance when the person conducting the audit works for the family. Maybe the replay booth really did locate one second. Maybe the official explanation is technically defensible. But if Western Michigan had needed that second, Tony Petitti would have personally swallowed the game clock, declared time a social construct and had Michigan Stadium demolished before sunrise. Western Michigan did not merely have to beat Michigan. It had to beat Michigan, the Big House, 110,000 people, the replay booth, the stadium clock, Fox, NBC, CBS, the Big Ten legal department, Vince McMahon, Earl Hebner and the linear progression of time. That is a difficult nonconference road environment. And the larger operation is becoming increasingly obvious. Ohio State wins the national championship. Michigan gets its scheduled turn. Oregon will receive a rotation once its probationary period ends. Penn State is permitted to remain nationally relevant so long as it loses the exact game everyone expects it to lose. And Indiana—Indiana!—has somehow been admitted to the family as a made man. Nobody saw that coming. Indiana spent most of modern history treating football Saturdays as a pleasant outdoor waiting room for basketball season. Now it is a national power with a 17-game winning streak, sitting at the table beside Ohio State and Michigan while Nebraska waits outside in the rain holding a Blockbuster membership card. The rest of the country exists to provide television inventory. The Big 12 is expected to produce six consecutive one-score games involving teams with identical 7–3 records, then apologize for not having enough helmet logos the playoff committee recognizes. The ACC is permitted one undefeated team, provided ESPN spends the entire season asking whether it has “really played anybody.” The MAC exists to accept a check, nearly pull off a historic upset and then discover that the laws of physics remain subject to conference review. The Big Ten, meanwhile, has the money, the networks, the brands, the replay booth and apparently the sovereign authority to manufacture additional time whenever one of its protected programs requires emergency liquidity. This is not conference realignment. It is racketeering with fight songs. It started by destroying a century-old West Coast conference. Then it absorbed the most valuable remaining assets. Then it secured the television markets. Then it spread its games across every available broadcast window. Now it is creating additional seconds whenever Michigan needs them. Where does it end? Today, it is one second in Ann Arbor. Tomorrow, Ohio State misses a field goal in the national championship and the Big Ten replay center announces that the uprights were temporarily misaligned. Penn State loses a conference game and receives a letter the next morning explaining that the result has been reclassified as a “strategic tie.” Oregon loses at Rutgers, but the conference rules that the result is invalid because its players’ circadian rhythms were not given due process. By 2030, Oregon will be playing Arsenal in Dublin at 5:30 a.m., Rutgers will have been relocated to Abu Dhabi and Ohio State will receive an automatic playoff semifinal berth by papal decree. Ryan Day will be handed a sealed envelope containing three complimentary timeouts, diplomatic immunity and the home address of the playoff committee chairman. Vince McMahon will stand at midfield before the national championship, tear both quadriceps simultaneously and still manage to yell, “RING THE FUCKING BELL.” Someone has to stop this. A Big 12 or ACC national championship is no longer merely a sports preference. It is an act of resistance. It is a vote for regionalism, chaos, tailgating, irrational hatred between neighboring states and the radical proposition that a football game should end when the clock reaches 0:00. We need a champion from outside the cartel. We need a program with history, an actual regional identity and fans deranged enough to withstand the full institutional force of the Big Ten machine. College football does not need another Ohio State coronation broadcast simultaneously across four networks. It needs the couches of Morgantown burning brightly enough to be seen from Big Ten headquarters in Chicago. Save the sport. Root for the Big 12. Root for the ACC. Root for anyone still operating within the traditional constraints of geography, arithmetic and time. The Big Ten must be stopped. https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/s/0VyofJBqsi
