A rental house we lived in years ago (and the other houses around it, too) all hung bright, flashy
spinning streamers from various places along the roof line and where the woodpeckers would tend to go. Looked kind of strange... like the previous tenants had decorated outside for a big party or something... but the landlord told us what they were for and to leave them where they were. We did... and only ever saw/heard the woodpeckers messing with a couple nearby trees and not the house. Kind of like these:
