They've lost most of the swing seats they're going to lose. And shivving Trump is a more guaranteed path to a loss for any swing state Senator than voting to acquit. There are maybe 5% of swing voters they need to get with an acquittal vote. If they vote to convict, they're losing a large chunk of their base and the general election is hopeless even if every single swing voter goes their way. (Which won't happen.)
And it's an even worse idea for the large majority of Senators that are in solidly red states, since they'll be guaranteeing themselves a primary defeat. Just look at all the GOP Senators forced out just for saying a few negative things about Trump. Actually voting to convict is political suicide.
Now, this is all analyzing things purely through their own personal self-interest and ignoring the fact that they swore an oath and in theory should act in the national interest.
The utterly maddening thing is that theyíre burning the country down not for some smooth, brilliant orator and politician, but for one of the worst, dumbest, generally useless humans to exist in the public sphere for the last fifty years. ó John Rogers (@jonrog1) January 31, 2020 .
