It’s why guys like Kyrie will continue to get max deals too.
Derozan and Vucevic aren’t getting any younger, and Lavine has proven himself to be a top 20-25 player in the league. You’re not going to be able to replace him, nor will you even have the money to try to replace him if you let him walk (barring a negotiation for a sign and trade).
The financial rules in the NBA greatly incentive to re-sign your existing players, since you can go above the cap when doing so. Lavine isn’t perfect, but a decision to let him walk would be a decision to deliberately get worse for the next couple seasons. And I don’t see them doing that.
The reality is still that nothing really matters in the NBA until you get a true playoff #1 option superstar, but that’s not going to happen for the Bulls right now so they might as well keep trying to be a playoff team.  Previous Message
If anything, Zach has shown he isn't the same player without the plus athleticism. Not sure how you use a max deal on that. You'd be paying him for past performance, instead of trying to win. No thanks.
