So Thompson's chart is meaningless to show that crime is up. In fact, it shows a significant percentage decline in the large number and a significant percentage increase in the orders of magnitude smaller number. People are rightfully afraid of being murdered. But your chance of being murdered by a stranger is very, very low. If you're murdered, it's by a family member or acquaintance. But that's not what scares people about the homicide rate being up - they're worried they're going to be killed by a stranger (i.e., while being mugged). That's what the narrative is, but it's not what is happening. Also, the murder rate has been increasing it looks like since 2012 or so. Gun buying shot up starting around Obama's election....
