#1, i think Villeneuve does a great job imagining the world. i thought the scenes with Feyd Rautha in the gladiator arena were a really cool imagining of the setting. many examples of that from the movie.

#2, the faithfulness to the book is much less in the second movie than the first. the first was pretty much shot for shot from the book. the way they treat Jessica and Chani's character in the movie is very different from the book. the way they treat the religion of the Fremen (a divide between North and South) is pretty much made up out of whole cloth. The time that is supposed to pass in the book is much longer, Paul and Chani have a child in the book, and Chani is ride or die for Paul pretty much from Day One instead of suspicious of his motives. I think they mishandled the Alia character.

Overall i think #1 greatly overcomes all my issues with the changes to the plot. i thought Zendaya was great as Chani, i'm not sure i love what they did with Chani's character. i think it makes more sense for her to be ride or die for Paul instead of ambivalent, seemed a little forced to me. (Edit: i also think Paul and Chani's child getting killed like in the book would've added to the plot. There are *reasons* that Paul's jihad is launched on the Empire, i think they kind of waived that stuff away and just blamed it on the Bene Gesserit) There were some scenes I thought were really great though from the movie that I don't think were in the book (or exactly like the book) like Paul getting the name Maud Dib.

i especially liked Austin Butler and Zendaya thought they stole the show. I liked Bardem and Rebecca Ferguson were great in their roles, Brolin played his character well. i liked Walken, saw some complaints on twitter that he was a non entity in that role but i think that's a good imagining of the emperor - sort of a weak and feckless guy. Florence Pugh was good but Irulan isn't much of a character in the book. I think Villenueve had to add her in more to try and explain the backstory. it's hard for me to buy Timothy Chalamet as the leader of a desert rebellion that succeeds in like 6 months. i think giving some more time to pass in the movie would've helped.

Finally found a time to go and watch it.

    Dang...it was really good.

As somebody that only ever watched the original movie (and have just gotten started reading the book)...do these movies adhere more closely to the book than the original movie back in the 80's?

I was struck with how dark it was. REALLY good...very much enjoyed it...but man, it was dark with the whole thing with Jessica/Paul/Chani/Stilgar....the religious angle of North and South, etc.

Also, I think I was kind of a moron because I had no idea that there was for sure going to be a Dune Pt. 3, so I was watching and waiting for resolution that never came in Pt. 2.

Going to go see it again next week. No Dune 2 popcorn buckets available for sale, sadly.
