in 2021, I spent Hanal Pixan, the Mayan cousin of Dia De Muertos, with a family in Pomuch, MX. This is the only place I'm aware of where people "dig up" the bones of their families. Pics are from the town cemetery with the family, at their home cooking "Piib", the cornbread meal made in the ground (ironic, dig up bones, bury dinner) , and at the candlemakers house, who makes candles from a special beeswax from the Melipona Bee for Hanal Pixan. He's going through his list of friends and family that have passed and reciting his annual prayer in Mayan. The entire celebration of death culminates in a rather extravegant parade of costumed townspeople from the cemetery to the fair.
Some more from Pomuch, then some from Calkini (Campeche) and Merida (Yucatan)
The more time I spend in Mexico the more I fall in love with the people and the culture. Sad most people don't see much outside their resorts. "You must own the honor of being the whitest, military vet, fat, multiple state property owner but most of all the one who hates their own country the most in our country."
Agreed. The thing I found most surprising about this experience
Was how the experience of being around death and bones (I cleaned the skull of the mom’s uncle) was actually so comforting. All these activities seem to bring death into a more real and alive state. I expected to be horrified at seeing the bones, but it was really comforting
