Where I grew up in the 70's there were a number of older or retired adults in my neighborhood. I was able to make a little money helping some of them with yardwork, taking out garbage and in the winter time shoveling snow. A couple of the women were very good cooks / bakers so I might get some tasty treats as well. Different times now, I guess. Perhaps that's not so common anymore.
