Bartolomé de las Casas, a priest and missionary who participated in the conquest but later became a fierce critic, documented the extreme brutality. His writings, particularly A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, offer a detailed account of the atrocities.
His own words: Las Casas wrote, "I saw here cruelty on a scale no living being has ever seen or expects to see," and that "What we committed in the Indies stands out among the most unpardonable offenses ever committed against God and mankind".
