One major reason first time home buyers are having such a hard time, is that most want insist on way more home than they really need. Buy a small fixer, 2bed 1bath. Buy in a less desirable neighborhood. Start small, it will appreciate so that you can get into something better.

I realize this wont work in all places, but then perhaps it's time to move to a lower cost area. Anything to start building equity. Otherwise it will just be more and more out of reach as the years pass.
