Re: Reuters Picked by slaves: coffee crisis brews in Brazil
Some roasters are now, again, asking suppliers to guarantee "Forced Labor Free" coffee. A few years ago some Scandinavian journalists were also on this serious and sad case. At that time CECAFE exporters' association coordinated the approach (for Brazil). Since then, many players have gone on the record that, obviously, they disapprove and don't willingly or knowingly participate or encourage forced labor practices. After all it is also against the Brazil Law! Obviously it is unrealistic to expect any player in the supply chain to sign off on proper behaviour of all players; this document would be meaningless anyway - but obviously serve the purpose of "protecting" the final buyer, on paper... Coffee changes hands several times and is also often blended to achieve a consistent export quality.
