Honduras Coffee Exports Tumble in January on Demand, Disease
By Marvin G. Perez
(Bloomberg) --
Exports through Jan. 29 fell 23% to 550,554 bags from the same period a year earlier, according to preliminary data from the Honduran Coffee Institute, or Ihcafe.
The drop is the fourth in a row, with a combination of factors driving the trend, says Miguel Pon, executive director for the nation’s main shipping group Adecafeh
Excess moisture from hurricanes last November exacerbated incidence of crop disease while demand remains slack, Pon says by phone
Coffee berry borer and leaf rust are expected to curb yield from initial estimates for 2020-21, he says
Ihcafe, which is reviewing the forecast, originally projected annual export output of 6.29m bags for the current season, up 12% from a year earlier
Adecafeh anticipated between 5.3m and 5.5m bags
