For example in some regions of Italy they estimate that up to 90% of new infections are so called British variant, Brazil or SA variant are still quite rare in Europe.
Situation is changing every day, the daily increases are uneven, some countries show improvements, some worsening. Every country tries something different and people in general are already exhausted by uncertainty and problems with vaccination.
There are significant differences among countries and it is hard to predict situation for entire Europe.
EU currently recommends to every member state to take at least 500 random samples every week for detail strain analysis, to monitor what version of virus is spreading and eventually find some new mutations. However, this effort is not yet properly implemented.
So far EU had slept and did not pay enough attention, therefore there is not enough solid data, but the data that are already available suggest that Europe, or at least some major EU countries are in UK's January situation.
UK did a lot of research and found the problematic variant soon and showed what needs to be done.
I hope we will not have some unpleasant surprises especially from central/eastern Europe, where the situation is particularly bad.
Strong sunshine and warm weather hopefully helps.
