Abrupt swings between low and high temperatures have triggered severe defoliation on trees in major arabica-coffee areas, worsening prospects for 2022 output, said Regis Ricco, a director at Minas Gerais-based RR Consultoria Rural.
The temperature fluctuation continued through much of July
“Trees did expel many healthy leaves” and are still doing so, Ricco says
Similar conditions may prevail in August, with more than 15-degree-Celsius differences between low and high temperatures expected, Celso Oliveira, a meteorologist at Somar Meteorologia, says in text message
The ground is covered with healthy leaves that are essential for supporting flowering and bean growth: Ricco
NOTE: In July, gap between low and high temperature was equal to or above 15 degrees Celsius in 22 days in Alfenas municipality, in Minas Gerais’ south, according to meteorological station of Cooxupe
Rains return to Center-South coffee, sugar and orange areas only in the second half of August, and there’s no big accumulation expected so far, Oliveira said
