Due to the intense drought that started with less rain already in March 2021, the soils of the coffee regions are extremely dry and water-deficient. As a consequence, many radicells, which make up the root system, have already begun to die. There is no water in the soil for the plants to drain and cool themselves, so many leaves dry out and fall. A coffee plant with fewer leaves has less accumulated energy to sustain future fruits.
