The Queen alludes to a little history of the Imperial State Crown here, but the clip doesn't spell it out. As you've said, the present design was made for Queen Victoria in 1838. One alteration was made in 1908 to accommodate Cullinan II, when the Stuart Sapphire was moved to the back. However, the frame was falling apart by the 1930s, so another, closely based on this, was made in 1937 for King George VI and the jewels transferred across. In 1953, the band was resized slightly to fit The Queen's head and the arches lowered by about one inch to give the whole thing a more feminine appearance. The history and flexibility of this crown will allow for further fitting and appearance alterations in future reigns.
