The Crown is quite symmetrical and lacking in "special" jewels that make the sides of (for example) the Imperial State Crown much more obvious, but, in my humble opinion, one can tell one side from the other.
Here is a link from a thread I made over at The Royal Jewels Lists Board that has some great pictures of St. Edward's Crown (scroll down toward the bottom). You can see that the "front" and "back" are very similar but they do have different coloured gems and hence a way of telling the sides apart.
I think that maybe it is more poignant that there is no "front" or "back" - maybe symbolizing the all-encompassing aspect of the institution of monarchy. (then again maybe I am just reading too much into it!!!)
