My first DNA discovery - not who I thought I was.

Thanks Debbie for giving us the opportunity of discussing DNA research and results.
My grandfather left Crediton for Australia in 1907 believing his surname (Venn) left him indelibly Saxon.
Over twelve months ago, after submitting a swab test (not sure if mentioning a brand name is advertising, so I won't) I had my returned results analysed and discovered our "Venn" forbears are Celts, and had been living in Devon, or should I say Dumnonia, perhaps, right back to the thawing of the last ice age.
This is time travel, and I am enjoying every moment.

In the near future, I will have the additional help of my grand daughter who is comfortable with math and data, and my grand son, who is passionate about his lineage.
I am of the older generation, but absolutely refuse to miss out on this exciting trip into our past.
Are there other FHS members with a similar experience?

So true - I'm certainly not who I thought I was! Despite the warnings that I might not like what I found, I wanted to break down a brick wall with DNA testing. Having identified a likely ancestor on paper who belonged to a well established tree with some exciting people on it (like a Cavalier supporter of King Charles II), I got a descendant from that tree and one of my own male cousins to test. And they weren't even in the same haplogroup. So, barring non-paternal events, it's back to the drawing board. On the other hand DNA proved my mother's surname must link to a well researched large tree of the same name, but I still can't find the paper trail to connect them. I had begun to think her ancestor must have been illegitimate, but now I think the illegitimacy might be on my father's side. So DNA has completely turned my ideas upside down, but it's better to know!

There was a black genealogist in the United States who had his DNA tested and he found both his paternal and maternal DNA lines were Scottish.

Some of your ancestors will be Saxon and some of them will be Celts.
