Reading messages here about the Afghanistan war, I know understand that I wrong to feel that Britain and the US should have came to the aid of the Republic during the Civil war. As they were/are Imperial powers and would have had no business getting involved in a dispute that should have been left to the Spanish people to resolve.
I accept that the Nationalists sought outside assistance, but that is different. They were offered or asked for help and it was given.
Stalin should not have tried to help the Republicans. No one should have. I accept that FDR did want to help, but he was advised against this. Clement Attlee did campaign for the UK to help the Republic. Now those attitudes may have defended as they were the old attitudes of the left. Who had an internationalist outlook. But these days, the left realise you have to be more nationalistic and lower your sights.
