Alan was very helpful to me when I was organising the law course for the Communist University of London, from 1973 to 1976. He had a powerful intellect and a staggering capacity for work. As I recall he had combined a sociology degree with a law degree at the same time as working effectively full time on student work. He could also hold his drink!
