Ukraine corn production

My recollection from the 1950s and 1960s was that there was a constant stream of news reports about the failure of the harvest in the Soviet Union (which included Ukraine), as a result of which the Soviets were being forced to import grain from other countries - especially USA. But today, the papers are full of reports that as the war in Ukraine is blocking grain exports from Ukraine, millions are threatened with starvation. Is it actually the case that Ukraine went from experiencing frequent bad harvests, to being one of the largest grain exporters in the world? Serious question, I really am curious.
